The construction industry is betting on sustainable projects in Colombia.

On August 25, the publishing house El Tiempo and Amarilo held a forum called ‘Construction, development and sustainable transformation in Colombia’, which had as its main theme, the path taken by the sector to achieve the development of increasingly sustainable cities and regions.

This sector has been working to improve the quality of life of citizens, betting on sustainability and leaving an important footprint in the country, so much so that Viviana Valdivieso, executive director of CCCS, said that «from construction we are impacting twelve of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)».

In fact, this industry is currently one of the main generators of employment in Colombia and one of the fundamental axes of the Government’s recovery strategy in the face of the economic impacts generated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than a trend, construction, transformation and sustainable development have achieved a space in the discussion of the most important actors to intervene, entering the agendas of government, banking, education and various interest groups. Precisely in this forum, some perspectives on the subject were taken into account.

What are the characteristics of a sustainable project?

This was one of the questions that came up for debate, taking into account that the word sustainability encompasses many important aspects, where the environment, the economy and the quality of life of citizens are involved.

Valdivieso explained: «Projects are sustainable to the extent that they respond to the characteristics of their climatic context, ecology and use needs, the most important thing is that they can be respectful and even help to regenerate the environment in which they are and that they can generate welfare for those who live there».

This means that, as he mentioned, a project is sustainable as long as it also takes into account aspects such as energy consumption, responsible water management, reuse of resources, use of renewable energy, good air quality, construction of green areas, natural lighting spaces, etc.

Amarilo’s contribution to sustainable transformation

The president of Amarilo was emphatic that organizations must establish sustainability within their DNA, that is, they must convey its concept and importance in all areas of the company, just as this important company in the construction sector has been doing, «in Amarilo we already have a sustainability direction, we are working on the reformulation of our sustainability policy and the design of a corporate sustainability strategy, from the top and we have established short, medium and long term goals, taking into account the measurement of the carbon footprint of what we are executing,» he said.
