Ruta N was never just a building.
It was the moment a city decided to redefine its future.
Standing at the intersection of urban transformation and economic reinvention, Ruta N represents one of the most significant milestones in Medellín’s evolution into a knowledge-based city. Conceived in 2009 as Colombia’s first public LEED-certified project, it was not simply designed as infrastructure, but as a platform for innovation—bringing together academia, private enterprise, and government under a shared vision. For Green Loop, it also marked the beginning: our first project, and the opportunity to translate a forward-looking urban strategy into a high-performance asset aligned with international standards.
From a technical and architectural perspective, Ruta N pushed the boundaries of complexity. Its exterior façade—defined by a carefully orchestrated triangular concrete geometry—was not only an iconic statement, but a high-performance response to its context: filtering urban noise, adapting to local climate conditions, and enhancing natural ventilation and daylighting.

Where architecture meets performance

Yet the building reveals a different logic inwardly, where open spaces, natural light, and bioclimatic strategies create efficient and comfortable environments. This dual condition—one building outwardly, another inwardly—demanded advanced simulation and performance-driven design decisions from the earliest stages.
One of the most defining challenges was the energy modeling of the building’s interior green envelope: a system of climbing plants designed to act as a living barrier against solar radiation. Capturing the dynamic and seasonal behavior of this “living skin” required a level of analytical rigor that went beyond conventional modeling approaches. By quantifying its impact on thermal loads and energy demand, Green Loop was able to validate design strategies that enhanced performance while reinforcing the project’s architectural intent.
Ruta N became more than a project—it became a foundation. It shaped new methodologies, strengthened our technical capabilities, and defined an approach that continues to guide our work today: integrating strategy, engineering, and sustainability to deliver measurable, high-impact results.
