Is regenerative mining necessary in Colombia?

In addition to integrating the environmental with a sustainable purpose, it has a sense of transcendence in cultural, economic, social, institutional and spiritual dimensions.

The debate on mining in Colombia must overcome the polarization that has done so much damage to the country. It is not a matter of discussing whether or not to mine, but of finding mechanisms to ensure that mining is sustainable, responsible, modern and sustainable.
The energy transition, a process that is advancing steadily, will require metals such as aluminum, chromium, copper, iron, lithium, manganese, silver, steel and zinc, which will be necessary for the construction of green energy systems.

Copper will be an essential mineral. A solar plant, for example, needs an average of 5.5 tons of copper to generate 1 megawatt of energy. A battery, 3 to 4 tons per megawatt stored, and a wind farm, between 2,000 and 6,000 tons depending on the generation capacity. In addition, the electric vehicle market will need more than 250,000 tons per year to meet the demand for these technologies. However, in order to develop a responsible and sustainable mining project with positive environmental impacts, it is necessary to adopt state-of-the-art technology to measure variables in real time, predict production, guarantee the safety of all human capital, achieve efficiency in energy consumption and attract the best talent in the region.

It is precisely this type of technology that AngloGold Ashanti has proposed for the subway mine at Quebradona, seeking to make Jericó and Colombia an example and benchmark for mining at the highest innovative and technological level, framed within the purpose of generating social, economic and environmental progress in the region.

Mining in this category will contribute to the development of digital mining talent, the generation of an ecosystem of more sophisticated suppliers, the creation of new startups that can contribute to the improvement of solutions and new lines of research and technological development that the country needs for mining to become a global benchmark and contribute to the world’s energy future.

The country needs regenerative mining, based on conscious capitalism, which helps to improve people’s wellbeing, protects ecosystems and serves as a source for the adoption of new technologies and the development of innovations. Giving it up has very complex implications. The good news is that we know how to do it.
