Where performance becomes part of the learning experience
The future of education is not defined only by what is taught, but by the environments that enable it to happen.
At Universidad EAFIT, the Science Building (Bloque 20) represents a decisive step toward redefining campus infrastructure as a high-performance system. Conceived as part of a broader sustainability vision, the project goes beyond a standalone building—it operates as a strategic piece within a connected, efficient, and future-ready campus ecosystem.
For Green Loop, the challenge was clear: move from isolated design decisions to an integrated performance strategy. This meant aligning energy, water, and operational systems at both the building and campus scale—ensuring that every intervention contributed to measurable outcomes, not just design intent.
From a technical standpoint, the project consolidates a set of high-impact decisions that directly influence long-term performance. Through advanced energy modeling, bioclimatic strategies, and a rigorous commissioning process, the building achieves over 33% energy savings and more than 66% reduction in water consumption. These results are not incidental—they are the outcome of designing with performance as a central criterion.
The integration of centralized HVAC systems, rainwater reuse, and optimized infrastructure further amplifies efficiency beyond the building itself, reducing operational complexity while strengthening system resilience. At the same time, a carefully developed lighting strategy enhances spatial quality, supporting user wellbeing without compromising performance.
But the real value of Bloque 20 lies in what it avoids. By embedding performance early in the decision-making process, the project prevents overdesign, reduces unnecessary CAPEX, and ensures that the asset will perform consistently over time. With a 98% construction waste diversion rate and a tangible reduction in carbon emissions, the project demonstrates that sustainability is most effective when it operates as a decision framework—not as a final layer.
Bloque 20 is not just a high-performance building. It is proof that when sustainability is integrated from the start, it becomes a driver of better decisions, stronger assets, and more resilient institutions.
